The Chettinad Story

From the grand mansions of Karaikudi to the heart of St. Louis

What is Chettinad?

Chettinad is a legendary region in South India — the ancestral homeland of the Nattukotai Chettiars, a community of merchant bankers who once controlled trade routes spanning Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and beyond.

Their wealth built the iconic Chettinad mansions — palatial homes adorned with Burmese teak pillars, Italian marble, and the geometric athangudi tiles recognized worldwide as symbols of South Indian grandeur.

The Cuisine of Spice Traders

Chettinad cuisine is born from the global spice trade. The Chettiars brought back exotic ingredients — kalpasi (stone flower), marathi mokku (dried flower pods), star anise — and married them with South Indian spices like black pepper, fennel, cumin, and curry leaves.

What makes it unique: spices are dry-roasted and freshly ground on a stone mortar for every meal. No pre-made masala powders. No shortcuts. The result is a depth of flavor unmatched in any other cuisine.

Our Mission in St. Louis

At The Chettinad, we are custodians of this centuries-old tradition. Every curry, dosa, and biryani is prepared with the same meticulous care found in a Chettinad family kitchen. We grind our spices fresh daily and cook with patience and pride.
